von Willebrands Disease type II

vWD type II is found in Deutsch-Drahthaar and GWP.           It is caused by a deficiency or abnormality of the protein which makes blood coagulate, thus affected dogs can bleed profusely from the slightest injury, even nose bleeds, bleeding from the mouth, and bleeding under the skin.        Puppies when docked or even cutting adult teeth can also bleed profusely.                                                                 Blood can also be found in the urine and stools.                   However not lethal in most cases I am sure distressing for affected dog and owner alike.                                           Operations and serious injury in affected dogs is treated with blood transfusion and plasma.                                             Minor injuries are treated with blood clotting agents, stitching and dressing.

Clear to clear matings produce all clear puppies.                   Clear to carrier matings produce 1/2 clear 1/2 carrier puppies.                                                                              Carrier to carrier matings produce 1/4 clear, 1/2 carrier, 1/4 affected puppies.

Hans Keuper, the former secretary of VVDD- (the Dutch Breed Club) was also the Chairman of the VVDD Breed Committee for many years, he Keeps several International Databases on vWD in the DD/GWP; of tested dogs (including carrier and affected), submitted by their owners (DNA-vWD-Databank), of DNA-vWD-carrying litters, of DNA-clear-litters, as well as pedigree analysis (amongst others).

Hans, Member of Honour of VVDD, has studied the international spreading of vWD in the DD/GWP since 1997 and has provided this service free of charge since June 2006. He provides monthly newsletters e-mailed direct to yourself , the complete run-down of the disease as well as the different databases with about 1000 DD/GWP.                                    Hows that for dedication!.
